Edie’s Marbled Denim Tights

Edie’s Marbled Denim Tights

Denim goes with everything!  So why not dye your own denim tights?  These tights started out white; then they were scrunched up, wrapped with rubber bands and immersed in a denim dye bath.

Supplies Needed

  • Rit Denim Blue Liquid Dye
  • White opaque tights, 89% nylon, 11% spandex, (RSAPH) from American Apparel
  • 4-Cup Measuring Cup & Measuring Spoons
  • Large Spoon
  • Glass bowl
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Rubber Bands
  • Plastic Table Cover

Instructions

1.  Wash tights with warm water and mild detergent.

2.  Rinse and squeeze out excess water.

3.  Scrunch up tights, beginning from the feet and working toward the top.

4.  Wrap tights loosely with rubber bands.  Note:  The tighter the rubber bands are tied, the more white area there will be.

5.  Cover work surface with plastic table cover.

6.  Wearing rubber gloves, shake Denim liquid dye bottle.  Then measure 2 Tablespoons dye and pour into glass bowl.  Add 4 cups very hot tap water (140F); stir.

7.  Test dye color by dipping small piece of scrap fabric in dye bath.  If color is too dark, add more water, if it’s too light, add more dye.

8.  Immerse wrapped wet tights into dye bath.  Let set for 4 – 6 minutes. To help dye penetration, turn tights occasionally and push down with spoon.

9.  Lift tights from dye bath and remove rubber bands.

10.  Rinse tights in cool water until water runs clear.  Then launder in warm water with a mild detergent; rinse and hang to dry.
