Important Notes

This technique must be done with Rit All-Purpose Dye. Accordingly, you can only marble dye natural fabrics (such as cotton, linen, wool, silk and ramie) and also rayon and nylon.

Instructions

  1. Cover work area with plastic table cover and have paper towels handy to protect against any possible spills. Gather supplies.
  2. Prewash pillow cases, rinse and leave damp.
  3. If you are dyeing something that is double-sided (i.e. a t-shirt or pillowcase) and want to prevent the dye from bleeding through to the back, place a piece of cardboard in between the front and back.
  4. Wearing rubber gloves, mix four tablespoons of Rit All-Purpose Liquid Dye with one cup of very hot water. Pour solution in a small squeeze bottle. Repeat with complementary colors.
  5. Fill a baking tray with shaving cream.
  6. Smooth with your hands or a spatula.
  7. Drip dye colors all over.
  8. Swirl the drops with a stick.
  9. Place fabric gently on the pan.
  10. Apply light pressure to smooth.
  11. Let the pillow sit on the pan for one to two minutes.
  12. Slowly lift the fabric from the pan.
  13. Scrape off excess foam.
  14. We strongly recommend setting the dye with a microwave. Follow these instructions.
  15. Rinse in cool water until water runs clear.
