Knitted Rag Sweater Made From RIT-Dyed Fabric and Yarn Scraps

Step 2:

I dyed the fabrics and yarns in the decided color theme
which in this case was determined by a cotton voile
print blouse which I damaged while working in a retail
store during the '90's. There are more than 30 dye baths
in this project. Materials were dyed with up to three
colors of dye using a variety of techniques to make the
spottiest product. Sloppiness makes the prettiest knits.
After dyeing, the fabrics are cut or torn into 1'' strips and
the yarns are wound into butterflies. Then everything is
combined into one fiber. Sections of yarn are made with
three strands. Square knots are used throughout.

Step 3:

Here are my notes from knitting this sweater. It was
knitted in one piece starting at one bottom edge and
ending at the other bottom edge. Then stitches are
picked up and knitted at the sides to make the sleeves.
The finishing is simple because the sweater is folded in
half and the side seams are sewn. I reserved some of the
three - strand yarn bundles and finished the neck edge
with a single line one single crochet using the big gray
crochet hook that was in the trash bag with the yarn
discarded by the lady who moved. There is no size
marked on it but is likely a size P or N hook.
