Triple-Dipped Donut & Rosettes Tie-Dye
This multi-technique tie-dye was created with Rit Golden Yellow and Rit Cardinal Red.

What You'll Need
  1. 100% cotton T-shirt or other article to dye
  2. 3 colors of RIT Dye, either powder or liquid. You’ll need
1 package powder dye or 1/2 bottle liquid dye for each color
  3. Rubber bands, string, or 2-inch wide strips of cloth for tying

Instructions:
  1. For rosettes, pinch up a few large sections of the T-shirt and tie tightly at the base with string or rubber bands.

Create “donuts” by pushing the tip of some of the rosettes back through the rubber bands.

  2. Before starting to dye, put on rubber gloves and prepare all dyebaths. For each color, dissolve 1 package RIT powder dye or 1/2 cup RIT liquid dye in about 2 gallons very hot water. For dark or bright colors, prepare each dyebath in a 12-quart stainless steel pot, then heat on stovetop to a temperature just below simmering.

  3. Starting with the lightest color, immerse the shirt in the dyebath for 4 to 10 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove shirt from dyebath and rinse under running cool water until water runs clear. Do not release ties.

  4. Add a few more rosettes and donuts to the shirt, then immerse the shirt in the next darker color for 4 to 10 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove shirt from dyebath and rinse under running cool water until water runs clear. Do not release ties.

  5. Create more rosettes and donuts as in step 4. Immerse in darkest color dye, then rinse under cool running water until water runs clear.

  6. Release ties and rinse until water runs clear. Wash the T-shirt in warm water using a small amount of mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly in cool water. Gently squeeze out excess water by rolling shirt in a clean old towel.

  7. Machine dry or hang to dry.
