Create a colorful twist on a timeless classic. Dye the board and pieces with Rit, then use FreeFlow™ Markers to add a vibrant checkerboard pattern and blended ombré details
Supplies
- Rit All-Purpose Liquid Dye in Fuchsia, Royal Blue, Truly Green
- Rit FreeFlow™ Jellied Brights Marker Pack
- Unfinished Wood Canvas Board
- Unfinished Wooden Chess Pieces
- Clear Wood Sealer
- Container(s) for Dyeing
- Sponge or Foam Brush
- Hot Water
- Dish Soap
- Measuring Cups and Spoons
- Rubber Gloves
- Tongs

Instructions
- Cover your work surface and put on rubber gloves.
- Fill a small container with 2 cups of hot water (ideally 140°F).
- Add well-shaken Rit All-Purpose Dye in Fuchsia according to your desired shade and mix thoroughly.
- Using foam brush or sponge, apply dye onto dry wood board to stain pink.
- Once the desired color is achieved, wipe away any excess dye with paper towels. Allow it to dry completely.
- Create additional dyebaths in separate containers for the chess pieces, submerge half in Royal Blue and the remaining half in Truly Green. Allow all pieces to dry completely.
- Lightly sketch a chessboard grid onto the dyed wood canvas board or use a stencil.
- Using the Rit FreeFlow™ Jellied Brights Marker Pack, color every other square to create the classic checkerboard pattern. Allow the natural dyed wood to remain visible for the alternating squares.
- Layer additional marker colors as needed to deepen the color of the painted squares and create more dimension.
- Use the brush tips to blend multiple marker colors around the outer border of the board, creating a soft ombré effect. Build color gradually, allowing layers to dry between applications for richer blends.
- Add final details or outlines with the bullet tips where desired to sharpen edges and enhance contrast.
- Allow the markers to dry completely then spray with a clear wood sealer of choice.
