Instructions
  1. Untwist the hank into a circle.
  2. To avoid tangling, use scrap yarn to secure four loose ties around the untwisted hank.
  3. Presoak yarn in hot water with 2 tablespoons of vinegar for wool yarn OR 2 tablespoons of salt for cotton yarn for 30 minutes.
  4. Gently wring out excess water.
  5. Wearing gloves, add 2 teaspoons of powder dye to jar or follow desired Color Formula.
  6. Add 1 teaspoon of vinegar for wool yarn OR 1 teaspoon of salt for cotton yarn to the jar
  7. Fill jar with 3-4 cups of very hot water, just below boiling around 200°F. If tap water is not hot enough, heat water on the kettle and add to the dyebath.
  8. Mix thoroughly until powder dye and salt dissolve.
  9. Repeat to create desired colors.
  10. Place damp untwisted yarn hank on a wire rack over a plastic container to catch any drips.
  11. Pour dyes over the hank randomly, allowing colors to overlap and bleed into one another.
  12. Allow yarn to sit and absorb dye for 30 minutes.
  13. Wearing gloves, rinse yarn in cold water until water runs clear.
  14. Gently wring out excess water.
  15. Wash in cold water with a mild detergent.
  16. Hang to dry.

TIP:

  • In absence of hot water, heat set dyed yarn in a microwave and oven safe container. For the microwave, heat for 1-2 minutes. For the oven, heat at 300F for 20 minutes. Allow it to cool completely before handing.
  • Clean microwave and oven safe container with soap, water and chlorine bleach.
