Supplies

  • Cotton Garment (Must contain no less than 60% cotton)
  • Plastic Container
  • Wire Rack
  • Scissors
  • Plastic Wrap
  • Salt
  • Blow Dryer
  • Iron
Instructions

  1. Prewash fabric in warm, soapy water without any fabric softener. This helps to remove any finishes that may interfere with dye absorption.
  2. Wring out excess water and leave fabric damp.
  3. Wearing gloves, add 1.5mL of dye to squeeze bottle or follow the desired Colour Formula from the included card.
  4. Add 5mL of salt. Fill the remainder of bottle with hot tap water.
  5. Place finger over bottle cap and shake well. Use caution when removing cap.
  6. Lay fabric on a flat, clean surface. Pinch the center of the bullseye pattern and pull up. Wrap rubber band 2.5 cm from the pinched center. Continue to add rubber bands incrementally down the rest of the fabric.
  7. Place bound fabric on a wire rack over a container to prevent dye from puddling underneath.
  8. Squeeze dye onto fabric. Apply colours in sections created by rubber bands. (Optional: Overlap colours
     to create variation in shades.)
  9. After dyeing, allow fabric to sit and absorb the dye for 30 minutes.
  10. To help set the dye, wrap fabric with plastic wrap and apply heat with a blow dryer. 5 minutes per side. Alternatively, place the wrapped fabric in the sun for 3 hours. Heat opens up the fibers in the fabric to allow for maximum dye absorption
  11. Remove fabric from plastic wrap and rinse thoroughly in cool water until rinse water runs clear. This is a very important step to prevent bleeding.
  12. Carefully remove any rubber bands with scissors.
  13. Dye patches separately or secure onto fabric prior to dyeing.
    1. To properly secure patches, place patchers on fabric as desired and press for 15-30 seconds using a household iron. Do not move the iron around.
    2. For added security, use a needle and thread to sew patch onto fabric using the backstitch. For sewing machines, zigzag stitch works best. Wash in cold water with a mild detergent.
