DIY Pom Pom Coral Travel Pouch

April 4 2018

Our friend The Crafted Life is really on to something with this awesome DIY. She took all of our favorite things (traveling, pom poms and our new shade Coral) and crafted this project that we couldn’t love more! “Because I’m constantly traveling back and forth to New York, I have a bad habit of just tossing smaller items and jewelry in my purse and hitting the road. Seriously, the bottom of my purse was a waste land of spare change, loose earrings, and candy before this project.  Because I’ve damaged and lost too many of my favorite items this way, I decided to give a plain travel pouch a colorful coral makeover to help keep me organized!”

  • White Cotton Travel Pouch
  • Pom Poms
  • Tacky Glue

Instructions
  1. Cover table with plastic. Gather supplies.
  2. Prewash pouch, rinse and leave wet. This will help to remove any finishes that may interfere with dye absorption.
  3. Add four cups of very hot tap water (around 140ºF). Make sure there is enough water for your pouch to move freely in the container. Also, if the water is not hot enough, heat some water on the stove or in the microwave and add it to the dyebath.
  4. Wearing rubber gloves, add 1/2 bottle of well-shaken Coral All-Purpose Dye. To enhance the color, add 1/2 cup of salt. Stir well.
  5. Test color by dipping a paper towel into the dyebath. If color is too light, add more dye. If color is too dark, add more water.
  6. Add wet pouch to dyebath. Stir slowly and continuously for 15 minutes.
  7. When desired color is achieved, remove from dyebath. Fabric will look darker when wet and will dry lighter.
  8. We strongly recommend using Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative immediately after dyeing and before washing. It enhances the color, increases color retention and prevents dye from bleeding into white areas. Follow these instructions.
  9. Rinse in cool water until rinse water begins to run clear.
  10. Wash in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse and dry.
  11. Before adding your pom poms, iron your pouch. Then, with a small dab of tacky glue, adhere your poms to your pouch and lay flat to dry.
  12. When everything is all good and dry, fill with your favorite items, and toss in your bag!
