Spider Web Batik Tablescape

If you love a dark table during Spooky season these batik spider web cloth napkins are the perfect DIY to get you on your way. Using school glue as a resist that magically disappears in the wash cycle, they are a fantastic project for kids and adults alike.

Supplies
  • Rit All-Purpose Dye in Black
  • Washable School Glue
  • White Cloth Napkins
  • ColorStay Dye Fixative
  • Tongs
  • Rubber Gloves
Difficulty
Intermediate
Time
Total: 1 hour
Instructions
  1. Pre-wash your fabric, then lay it out in a large enough workspace where you won’t have to move it around once the glue has been applied.

  2. Using washable school glue, draw various spider web patterns, making sure to connect all glue lines (some will bubble up and need to be spread back out and connected). Let the glue dry completely before moving on to the next step of the process.

  3. Mix dye according to directions and submerge the fabric. If using the stovetop method, don’t leave the fabric in the pot for much longer than 10 minutes, as it could start to remove the glue resist.
  4. After removing the fabric from the dye bath, soak in a ColorStay Fixative bath to hold in the color. Rinse.
  5. Place fabric in the washing machine and wash on warm. Once the cycle is finished the spider webs will show up like magic!
