Ombré Dyed Halloween Leash

Your dog deserves some Halloween flair too! There’s nothing easier to make (or more fun) than an ombré dyed dog leash in Halloween colors.

Supplies
  • Cotton White Dog Leash
  • Rit All-Purpose Liquid Dye (Sunshine Orange and Black)
  • Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative
  • Medium Sized Container
  • Liquid Dish Detergent
  • Salt
  • Paper Towels
  • Plastic Table Cover
  • Rubber Gloves
Time
Total: Under 1 Hour
Difficulty
Beginner
Instructions
  1. Cover table with plastic. Gather supplies.
  2. To determine how much dye is needed: Weigh or estimate the weight of the leash. As a guideline, 1 box of powdered dye or ½ bottle of liquid dye will color 1 lb. of dry weight fabric. For dark colors and for more intense bright colors, double the amount of dye used.
  3. Pre-wash leash with detergent, rinse and leave wet.
  4. Wearing rubber gloves, fill a container with 3 gallons of very hot water. Pour Sunshine Orange dye solution into water, add a squirt of liquid dish detergent and a cup of salt; stir well.
  5. Now its dye time! Dip 1/2 of the leash into the dye bath and let it sit for 30 seconds. Pull out a foot of lightly dyed rope and hang it over the side. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes and then pull out 1 more foot of rope at a time, waiting 5-10 minutes for each section until half of the rope is fully dyed.
  6. Now repeat with Black dye on the other side of the leash. Double the dye quantity to get a bold color. You probably won’t get a true ombré with Black so just dip the entire half in the dyebath.
  7. Recommended: To enhance the color and reduce color bleeding, use Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative immediately after dyeing and before washing, following package instructions. Leave leash in fixative for 20 minutes.
  8. Rinse leash in cool water until rinse water begins to run clear.
