Supplies

  • Cotton Boat Tote
  • Rit All-Purpose Dye in Petal Pink and Sunshine Orange
  • Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative
  • Sink or (2) Large Containers for Dyeing
  • Measuring Cup
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Salt
  • Liquid Dish Detergent
  • Plastic Table Cover
  • Plastic Gloves

Instructions

  1. Pre-washย toteย in warm, soapy water. This helps to remove any finishes that may interfere with dye absorption.ย Leave damp and gather supplies.
  2. Fill two separate plastic orย stainless steelย containers withย 2ย gallons of hot water in each.โ€ฏThe water should ideally beโ€ฏ140ยบF.โ€ฏIf tap water is not hot enough, heat water on the stove and add to the dyebath.ย ย
  3. To enhance the color, add one cup of salt to each dyebath.โ€ฏAdd 1 teaspoon of dish detergent to help promote level dyeing.ย
  4. Wearing rubber gloves, add 1ย cupย ofย Sunshine Orange Rit All-Purposeย dye to one container and 1ย cupย of Petal Pink dye to the other container. Stir well.ย
  5. Dip half of theย damp toteย into the Petal Pink dyebath. To prevent a straight line, keep moving up and down in the dyebath to create a gradient.ย ย
  6. When desired saturation is achieved,ย rinseย out excess dye and rinse in cool water until the water runs clear.ย Keep dyedย portionย downward to avoid getting dye onto the undyed areas.ย ย
  7. Turn theย toteย over and dip the other half into theย Sunshine Orangeย dyebath, following the same steps above.ย
  8. Remove from the dyebath. Squeeze out excess dye.ย
  9. We strongly recommend usingโ€ฏRit ColorStay Dye Fixativeโ€ฏimmediatelyย after dyeing and before washing.โ€ฏIt enhances the color, increases colorย retentionย and prevents dye from bleeding into white areas.โ€ฏย
  10. Rinse in cool water until rinse water begins to run clear.ย
