Dip Dyed IKEA Curtains

July 18 2018

We love IKEA for its simple, stylish home décor at bargain prices. You would never guess that these beautiful curtains were only $29.99. But they are! Because they were 100% cotton, were were able to dip dyed them with our Teal All-Purpose Dye to create something you would never see anywhere else!

Instructions
  1. Cover work area with plastic table cover and have paper towels handy to protect against any possible spills. Gather supplies.

  2. For best results, prewash curtains to remove any finishes that may interfere with dye absorption. Leave damp.

  3. Wearing rubber gloves, fill a large container with 3 gallons of very hot water. The water should ideally be 140ºF. If tap water is not hot enough, heat water on the stove and add to the dyebath. Pour 1/2 bottle of well-shaken dye into dyebath.

  4. To enhance the color, add one cup of salt. Add 1 teaspoon of dish detergent to help promote level dyeing. Stir well.

  5. Test color by dipping a paper towel into the dyebath. If color is too light, add more dye. If color is too dark, add more water.

  6. Wrap two-thirds of the curtain around a dowel rod.

  7. Immerse the bottom one-third of the curtain in the dyebath for 10 minutes, gently moving it back and forth and up and down to create an uneven look. When desired color is achieved, remove from dyebath. Fabric will look darker when wet and will dry lighter.

  8. Remove garment from the dyebath. Squeeze out excess dye.

  9. We strongly recommend using Rit ColorStay Fixative immediately after dyeing and before washing to enhance color, increase color retention and prevent dye from bleeding into white areas. Follow these instructions.

  10. Rinse in cool water until water runs clear.

  11. Wash in warm water with mild detergent, rinse and dry.
