Project Description

It's summer and the perfect time to wear tie dye! I've been inspired by all the high end stores carrying tie dye this season. You can make your shirt following these simple steps!

Prep, dyeing & Rinse time: About 1 hour

Rit Products Used

You'll Also Need

  •   string and ribbon

  •   4 gallon pot

  •   cotton fabric

  •   measuring spoons

  •   rubber bands

  •   salt white vinegar

  •   scissors

Step By Step

  1. I used a plain white cotton shirt.

  2. Starting from the left hand side, accordion fold across the shirt.

  3. Wrap the shirt up with rubber bands. I also used string and ribbon. The more you wrap the whiter the shirt will be. This will be longest part of the project.

  4. I used Rit Liquid Dye in Petal Pink.

  5. Prepare your dye. I followed the directions on the Rit bottle. I used hot water and mixed in a cup of salt along with the dye. Place the shirt in the bucket and stir. I left the shirt in the dye for 40 minutes stirring occasionally.

  6. I like to place tin foil in the bottom of my sink before dumping out the dye. It helps with clean up. Cut the strings and wash your shirt out with cool water. Hang up to dry.

  7. I really like how this shirt came out! The ribbons left some very neat designs. I will be making more of these throughout the summer!
