Project Description

Cardboard Roll Boats! We all know how much I love to recycle and re-invent everyday things. Here's a great recycled cardboard project perfect to do w/your kids. A project to make using left over cardboard paper rolls, paper straws, white card stock, and Rit Dye.

  •   cardboard paper roll

  •    paper straw

  •    white card stock

  •    paper floral

  •    pinking scissors

  •    foam stars

  •    glitter

  •    tacky glue

  •    hot glue sticks

  •    washi tape

  •    hole punch

  •    white acrylic paint

  •   glass bowl small

  •   glue

  •   glue gun

  •   latex gloves

  •   large metal spoon

  •   paint brush

  •   paper plate

  •   paper towels

  •   plastic table cover

  •   scissors

Step By Step

  1. Directions To Paint Card Stock: Prep your surface. Lay plastic table cover on the surface you will working over. Put on your rubber or latex gloves

  2. Pour some black liquid Rit Dye into a glass bowl or jar. Stick paint brush directly into the dye and paint the white card stock. Paint two coats, let dry between coats.

  3. Directions To Tint White Acrylic Paint: Pour some white acrylic paint in a small bowl. Add a few drops of tan liquid dye into the paint, stir, set aside.

  4. Directions To Make the Boats: Cut cardboard paper roll into 2 1/2 inch ring shapes. Then paint each one with the tinted tan acrylic paint mixture. Cut one end of the painted ring shape with pinking shears.

  5. Cut a paper straw in half, hot glue to inside of the cut ring shape. Cut a triangle shape from the dyed black card stock. Punch two holes into the side of the triangle shape using a hole punch, one hole at the top and one hole at the bottom of the shape.

  6. Attach the cut and hole punched triangle shape to the paper straw using paper floral wire. Cut another piece of paper floral wire and attach one end to the top of the paper straw and one end to the inside of the cut ring shape.

  7. Cut pieces of scrapbook paper or more dyed black card stock. Attach the cut pieces of paper to the paper floral wire using hot glue. Then hot glue a foam star to the top of the paper straw, coat the star in craft glue, sprinkle with glitter.

  8. Finally wrap a piece of washi tape around the bottom of the boat. Add any extra embellishments at this time and you are boat is complete.

  9. Tips/Tricks: -Tint your white acrylic paint with any color Rit dye for more color choices. -Dye white foam stars with Rit Dye. -Dye white card stock and use a star punch in place of the foam stars. -Use tacky glue or Elmers glue in place of hot glue.
