Microwave Dyeing Technique

Dyeing in the microwave can be done when tie-dyeing and marbling fabric. Up to one yard of fabric can be dyed in the microwave. Dyed fabric will appear marbled with light and dark areas. Wax-less batik dyeing and dyeing paper can also be done in the microwave. It’s quick and easy to do!

Helpful Reminders

  • DO NOT DYE RAYON, WOOL OR GARMENTS WITH METAL TRIM, SUCH AS ZIPPERS, SNAPS AND STUDS, IN THE MICROWAVE.
  • Nylon is very heat sensitive so when dyeing in the microwave, heat in short increments of 15 – 30 seconds (1 minute total) and watch fabric closely. Very sheer nylon interfacing should not be dyed in the microwave.
  • It is not necessary to use salt, vinegar or detergent when dyeing in the microwave.

Tie-Dyeing in the Microwave

  1. Prepare dye solution following package instructions. Pour into a glass bowl or disposable plastic container, adding just enough hot water to cover the item.
  2. Push folded or wrapped fabric in container of dye and cover container with plastic wrap.
  3. Cover bottom of microwave with paper towels to protect against spills. Place container in microwave and set on high for 2 minutes.
  4. Wearing thick rubber gloves, carefully remove container from microwave. THE PLASTIC WRAP WILL BE HOT. Wait a few minutes to allow the plastic wrap to cool.
  5. Remove plastic wrap and rubber bands, if used, from dyed fabric and rinse in cool water until water runs clear. Wash in warm water with mild detergent. Rinse and dry.
