Bulk Dyeing Techniques

Obtaining successful results is easy with Rit ProLine dyes. Our dyes are tested for purity, concentration, strength, and color throughout the manufacturing process to ensure that you are getting consistent and high quality color. And, our dyes conform to ASTM D-4236, so they are safe for arts and crafts applications.

We provide dyeing instructions below,

Tips for Dyeing in Bulk:

  1. Begin by weighing the material to be dyed. Weigh the material when it is dry. If material is to be dyed in batches, each batch must be dry-weighed separately.
  2. Weigh the dye using 1 oz. of dye for every 1 lb. of dry weight material.?
  3. Heat is a major factor in successful dyeing. A higher dye-bath temperature increases the rate at which dye is absorbed. If cold water is used, color intensity will be greatly decreased. Therefore, we recommend a dye bath temperature between 140º and 180º F.?
  4. Timing is another factor for achieving successful results. We recommend immersing material in a dye-bath for a minimum of 30 minutes and a maximum of one hour. Timing is consistent, regardless of the color depth desired. If a lighter color is desired, use less dye. If a deeper color is desired, increase the amount of dye used. In either case, the dye cycle time required remains constant.
  5. When the material is removed from the dye-bath, it is important to rinse well in cool running water until the rinse water is clear. This is necessary to remove surface dye. Next, wash the dyed material with a mild detergent in cool water.?
  6. We do not recommend reusing the dye-bath for multiple dyeings. Reuse of a dye bath will not provide consistent, reproducible color, even though the dye-bath appears to contain adequate dye.?
  7. Dyes will bleed (color rubs off) for a variety of reasons including: (a) if the material is overloaded (too much dye for the dry weight of the material); (b) if insufficient heat and time to dye the material was used; or (c) if the material was not rinsed until the rinse water ran clear.
