Matching Mother & Child “Tie-Dyed” Plaid Aprons

Supplies Needed

  • Rit Liquid Dye: Fuchsia & Purple               
  • Child & Adult Aprons, 100% cotton or cotton/polyester blend (lighter shades)
  • 2-Cup glass measuring cup
  • Measuring spoons
  • Metal spoon
  • Bucket or dishpan
  • Rubber gloves
  • Rubber bands, various sizes

Tie-Dyeing Instructions

Preparation:  Wash, dry and iron aprons to remove any fabric finishes.

  1. Accordion pleat apron horizontally in 2” wide folds the entire length of the apron.  To get a sharp crease, press folds with an iron.  Then accordion pleat strip into a square.  Wrap square with a rubber band in each direction so it looks like a package.  Bundle up apron strings and wrap with rubber bands.  The rubber bands form a resist and prevent the dye from penetrating the fabric.
  2. Place folded apron in warm water and let set.
  3. Prepare Fuchsia dyebath following manufacturer’s directions for bucket dyeing.  Place wet folded apron into dyebath and let set for 30 minutes; stir occasionally.
  4. Rinse folded apron and remove rubber bands.  Refold and accordion pleat apron in 1” wide folds as described in step 1 and tie with rubber bands. 
  5. Prepare Purple dyebath following manufacturer’s directions for bucket dyeing.  Place folded apron into dyebath and let set for 30 minutes; stir occasionally. 
  6. After dyeing, rinse apron in cool water until water runs clear.  Then wash in warm water with detergent, dry and iron.

 

Mother & Child “Tie-Dyed” Aprons with Sea Shells & Stones

Supplied Needed

  • Rit Liquid Dye:  Tan, Tangerine, Lemon Yellow, Kelly Green
  • Child & Adult Aprons, 100% cotton or cotton/polyester blend (lighter shades)
  • 2-Cup glass measuring cup
  • Measuring spoons
  • Metal spoon
  • Bucket or dishpan
  • Rubber gloves
  • Rubber bands, various sizes
  • Stones & sea shells for exploding circle designs

Tie-Dyeing Instructions

Preparation:  Wash, dry and iron aprons to remove any fabric finishes.

1. Beginning at the top of the aprons, place one stone or sea shell on apron and tie very tightly with a rubber band. Then continue tying stones and sea shells randomly throughout aprons.  Note: The wider the rubber band, the more white fabric that will show.

2. Place tied aprons in warm water and let set.

3.   Wearing rubber gloves, prepare Burnt Orange custom recipe in dishpan or bucket. Measure and mix two Tablespoons Tan Liquid & two Tablespoons Tangerine Liquid with two gallons hot water; stir well.

4.  Place wet tied aprons into dyebath and let set for 30 minutes; stir occasionally.

5.  After dyeing, cut rubber bands.  Rinse apron in cool water until water runs clear. Then wash in warm water with detergent, dry and iron.

 

Mother & Child “Tie-Dyed” Chartreuse Aprons

Follow Steps 1 – 5 above, using Chartreuse custom recipe:  ¼ cup Lemon Yellow Liquid & 1 ½ teaspoons Kelly Green Liquid.
