Edie's Animal Print Camisole & Skirt

Edie's Animal Print Camisole & Skirt

Make your own fashion statement and have some fun, too, by creating an animal print camisole and coordinating skirt. Both the camisole and skirt are primarily made of nylon. Rit dyes nylon very easily and quickly, unlike many other types of dyes, so the colors are deep and rich.

Supplies Needed

  • Rit Liquid Dye: Golden Yellow, Cocoa Brown, Dark Brown
  • White Camisole & Skirt, 92% nylon, 8% spandex
  • Measuring spoons & measuring cup
  • Spoon for mixing dye
  • Large 8-cup glass bowl or container
  • Small 1-cup plastic container
  • Sea sponge & stencil brush
  • Butcher paper or craft paper
  • Plastic wrap
  • Paper towels
  • Rubber or latex gloves
  • Plastic sheet to protect table

Instructions

  1. Launder camisole to remove any finishes that may prevent absorption of the dyes.
  2. Cover table with plastic cover.
  3. Wearing rubber gloves, measure 1 Tablespoon Golden Yellow liquid dye and 1/4 Teaspoon Cocoa Brown liquid dye into large container.  Add 8 Cups very hot tap water.  Stir well.

Note:  Shake liquid dye bottles before measuring dye needed.

  4. Wet camisole and immerse in dye bath for 1 minute, moving continuously until desired color is achieved.  This creates the overall base color.
  5. Remove camisole and rinse in cool water until water runs clear.  Wash in warm water with mild detergent.  Rinse and hang dry.

Creating Spots

  1. Cut a piece of butcher or craft paper to fit inside camisole to prevent spots from bleeding through to the other side.  Place dry dyed camisole on sheets of paper that have been overlapped so paper is slightly larger than fabric.
  2. Wearing rubber gloves, pour ½ cup Dark Brown dye into a small container.  Add 1 Tablespoon tap water; stir well.  Cover with plastic wrap.  Line bottom of microwave with paper towels.  Place dye in microwave and set on HIGH for 30 – 60 seconds until dye is hot.
  3. To make spots, use a combination of a sea sponge and stencil brush.  Cut or tear sea sponge into a small shape.  Dip sponge in dye; squeeze out excess.  Then press sponge onto fabric.  Cover front of camisole randomly with dye spots.  Then fill in with spots made from stencil brush.    Note: Continue to reheat dye as needed to keep it hot while making the animal spots.
  4. Turn camisole over to back side and make spots as described in Step 3.
  5. When finished, remove dye-spotted camisole from paper and place on overlapping sheets of plastic wrap.  Then cover with plastic wrap and seal outer edges.
  6. Fold to fit into microwave lined with paper towels.  Set on HIGH for 30 seconds.  Nylon can be heat sensitive so watch closely and check fabric after 30 seconds.  Then repeat for another 30 seconds.  Remove from microwave.  Cut open plastic wrap.  Allow to cool.

  7. Rinse camisole in cool water until water runs clear.  Wash in warm water with mild detergent; rinse and hang dry.
