Trick-or-Treat Bags

Step 2:

Spray-Dyed Ghosty Boo Bag

-Trace and cut out patterns for Ghost and Boo onto plastic template sheet.

- Lay template pieces on paper towels and apply spray adhesive to back sides.

- Position Ghost and Boo template patterns on bag and press down firmly.

- Prepare Rit Dye: Wearing rubber gloves, mix 1 box Black powder dye with 2 cups very hot water; stir well. Pour some dye into plastic spray bottle. (Unused dye can be saved for another project.)

- Insert 9” x 12” piece of cardboard or heavy craft paper into bag.

- Place bag on several layers of paper towels or newspapers.

- Cover bag handles and top edge of bag with paper towels.

- Spray bag randomly with Black dye around plastic templates, covering entire front and bottom of bag. Then turn bag over to other side. Cover handles and top edge of bag with paper towels and spray randomly with Black dye.

- Remove paper towels and plastic templates. Do not remove cardboard. Wrap bag in plastic wrap, sealing edges. Fold to fit into microwave.

- Cover bottom of microwave with paper towels. Place plastic-wrapped bag in microwave and set on High for two minutes. Wear rubber gloves or use a pot holder to remove from microwave. Cut open plastic wrap. Allow to cool. Then remove cardboard.

- Rinse bag under cool running water, holding bag handles so dye flows through from light to dark areas. Wash with warm water and detergent; rinse and dry flat.

Step 3:

Dip-Dyed Jack-o’-Lantern Bag

- Prepare Rit Dye: Wearing rubber gloves, measure and mix dyes as follows; stir well. Pour each dye color into a plastic container or bowl, large enough for dipping bag.

* ½ Cup Lemon Yellow liquid with 4 Cups very hot water
* 1 box Sunshine Orange powder with 4 Cups very hot water

- Dip entire bag into Yellow dyebath for 1 -2 minutes. Remove and squeeze out excess dye.

- Then dip bottom one-third of bag into Sunshine Orange dyebath. Let set for 2 - 4 minutes, then gradually lift and lower bag to create lighter shades.

- Remove bag and rinse in warm water, then gradually cooler water until water runs clear. Wash with warm water and detergent; rinse and dry flat.

- Trace pumpkin face (eyes, nose, & mouth) onto paper or template plastic. Then use patterns to cut pieces from black felt.

- Glue felt pumpkin face pieces to one side of bag.

Step 4:

Tie-Dyed Flying Bats Bag

- Scrunch up bag into a ball, beginning at one corner. Wrap loosely with rubber bands. The tighter the rubber bands are tied, the more white area there will be.

- Dip wrapped bag into warm water; let set.

- Prepare Rit Dye: Wearing rubber gloves, mix one box of Sunshine Orange dye with 4 Cups very hot water in large glass or plastic bowl. Stir well.

- Remove tied bag from water and immerse into dye bath. Push down with spoon.

- Cover bottom of microwave with paper towels. Place container in microwave and set on High for 2 minutes. Wear rubber gloves or use a pot holder to remove from microwave.

- Remove bag from dye bath. Rinse with cool water and remove rubber bands. Rinse with warm water and then, then gradually cooler water until water runs clear.

- Wash with warm water and detergent; rinse and dry flat.

- Trace large and small bat patterns onto paper or template plastic. Then use patterns to cut one large and two small bats from black felt.

- Glue bats on bag as desired.
