Shibori hand-dyed fabrics add colorful movement and pattern texture to this bold, dramatic quilt. Teri Lucas, quilt designer, author and teacher, created this virtual quilt using software by Electric Quilt 6.

Step 1:

The hand-dyed fabrics in this quilt are the same fabrics featured in Rit Shibori Dyeing Techniques.

Finished quilt size 40” x 40”
Hand-Dyed Shibori Fabrics

Before making this quilt, you will need to dye 10 fat quarters using Rit liquid dye.

Dye colors used are: Apple Green, Teal, Lemon Yellow, Fuchsia, Scarlet, Royal Blue and Purple. Specific fabric color combinations are listed below. Follow directions for Rit Shibori Dyeing under Dyeing Techniques. Note: Black fabric can be purchased.
Fabric Requirements & Supplies

* 6 Fat Quarters (18” x 22”) Shibori dyed fabric: Lemon Yellow/Scarlet, Fuchsia, Royal Blue/Purple, Apple Green, Violet, Teal/Lemon Yellow
* 4 Fat Quarters (18” x 22”) Shibori dyed Fuchsia fabric for setting and corner triangles
* 1 ¼ Yards Black Fabric for blocks, setting, sashing and border
* 1 ¼ Yards Backing Fabric, coordinating color
* 40” Square Quilt Batting
* Rotary Cutter, Cutting Mat and Ruler
* White Sewing Thread for piecing
* Black Sewing Thread for machine quilting
* Sewing Machine

Step 2:

Cutting
From Black Fabric Cut:

2 – 40 ¼" x 1½” strips - border

2 – 39 ¾" x 1½” strips - border

2 – 46 1/2" x 1½” strips - sashing

2 – 28 ½" x 1 ½” strips – sashing

2 – 10 ½" x 1½” strips - sashing

18 – 8 ½" x 1½” strips - sashing

26 – 5 ½" x 2 ¾” rectangles (cut on the diagonal) – blocks
From Fat Quarters Cut:

13 – 5 1/4” squares (3 Lemon Yellow/Scarlet, 5 Fuchsia, 1 Royal Blue/Purple, 1 Apple Green, 3 Violet)

26 – 4 ¾" x 2 ¾” rectangles, cut on diagonal: 7 each from Lemon Yellow/Teal, Lemon Yellow/Scarlet, Royal Blue/Purple and Fuchsia
From 4 Fuchsia Fat Quarters Cut:

4– 10 ½” squares cut in half on the diagonal for setting triangles

1 – 10 ¾” square cut in half on both diagonals for corner triangles

Step 3:

Piecing Blocks

Stitch black triangles (cut from rectangles) on 2 sides (opposite) of each 5 ¼” Shibori squares – press to black. Repeat on remaining 2 sides. Check block size trim to 6-7/8” if necessary

Following same steps add Shibori triangles (cut from rectangles) to create blocks.

Joining Row Units
Row 1 - Center Row

Stitch 8 ½” x 1½” black strips to top of 4 blocks and top and bottom of 5th block. Stitch units together. Stitch 46 ½” x 1½” black strips to sides of unit. Stitch long side of corner setting triangles to top and bottom of row.
Row 2 – Make 2

Stitch 8 ½” x 1½” black strips to top of 2 blocks and top and bottom of 1 block. Stitch units together. Stitch 28 ½” x 1 ½” strip to outside of each unit. Stitch setting triangles to each end of unit. Line corner of triangles up with edge of row. Stitch Row 2 unit to each side of Center Row. Careful pinning will keep rows lined up correctly.
Row 3 – Make 2

Stitch 8 ½” x 1½” strips to top and bottom of block. Stitch 10 ½” x 1 ½” strip to one side. Stitch setting triangles to top and bottom. Stitch corner triangle to short side of block. Stitch Row 3 unit to each side of Row 2.

Note: Quilt will need to be trimmed prior to adding final border.
Borders

Stitch borders to sides of quilt.

Add top and bottom borders.

Border suggestion: Before adding borders, measure through center of quilt and cut strips to that size. Add strips to right and left side of quilt. Once these are added, measure through the center of the quilt with the borders on, cut top and bottom borders that size and stitch to quilt.

Quilting: Layer the backing, batting and quilt top; baste layers together. Machine quilt layers together by stitching in the ditch around each piece in the quilt with black thread. This will highlight the hand-dyed Shibori fabric.
