Revamped Plastic Canvas Kleenex Box Cover

My grandmother made this Kleenex box cover over 5 years ago, and it has been sitting in her car the whole time. It was dirty, bent out of shape, and hadn't been used in a while. I decided to grab it and dye it to match the colors of our bedding to match our decor. I already had the blue and green dye, so this project didn't cost me anything. Now we have a matching Kleenex box cover, and we don't need to constantly hunt for boxes that in certain colors!

I like how the gradient of green to blue turned out.

Step 1:

Start with a completed plastic canvas Kleenex box. This one was bent out of shape, and had some stains on it. It used yarn that changed colors throughout, so I was worried how it would look once I dyed it, but it looks pretty cool.

Step 2:

Prepare your dye solution, and using a sponge brush, "paint" the dye onto the cover. Note that if you drag the brush along it, it will cause the yarn to fuzz up, so it's better to just push the sponge onto the cover to get the dye to come out.

Step 3:

Once you have dyed one half, flip it over and do the other side in another color (you can either do half and half, or paint stripes, or whatever pattern you want). Be sure to wear gloves, otherwise you will end up with blue and green fingers like me!

Step 4:

Let cover sit for a while so the dye can do its magic. Then rinse with cold water until it runs clear. Then set out to dry completely before using. If the yarn gets fuzzy, use one of those electric sweater pill removers to get rid of the fuzz.

From here, you can decorate your box further by adding trim or other accessories.
