I make earrings and rose pins out of redfish scales from Redfish caught from Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.

Scarlet Red Rose pin made from Redfish scales and purple earrings with crystals made from redfish scales. Rit dye allows me the best and brightest colors for my jewelry from redfish scales. I have experimented with food coloring, natural juices and all sorts of colors to dye the scales but Rit dye gives me the best vibrant color ever! Now I only use Rit Dye....

Step 1:

This is the Redfish that is caught by my boat captain friends. They clean the fish and they give me the sides with skin and scales. I then proceed to clean the scales from the skin and get the "fish smell" from them by using a light solution of clorox bleach. If too much bleach is used the scales will not take the Rit dye very well so you have to be very careful not to use too much. Sometimes it takes me more than one soaking of the scales to get them to smell "clean".....
