Here’s a new twist on creating batik-like effects. Rebekah Meier created a graphic batik motif on this lacey tank top by stenciling with a white acrylic paint on a white top. Then she dyed the top in Rit Violet dye. The painted area remained white and created a resist for the dye, resulting in a batik-like flower motif with precise, defined lines. Very clever! This fun lacey top can be layered and worn all year round.

Lacey Tank Top Embellished Using a Paint Resist Technique

Step 1:

1. Cover work surface with plastic table cover.

2. Prewash tank top to remove any sizing or finishes that could alter dye absorption. Do not use any fabric softener.

3. Place tank top on covered surface.

4. Place stencil on bottom front of tank top. Use a stencil spray adhesive to hold stencil in place. Insert piece of cardboard or craft paper between the front and back of the top in the area to be stenciled. This will prevent the paint from bleeding through.

5. Squeeze a quarter size amount of white fabric paint onto a paper plate.

Step 2:

6. Dip stencil brush into paint. Brush excess paint onto paper towel.

7. With loaded stencil brush, and using a pouncing motion, apply paint to top through the stencil. Let dry completely, following manufacturer’s instructions.

8. Fill large plastic basin with 12 cups of very hot water (140°F). If tap water is not hot enough, heat water in a tea kettle or in the microwave.

9. Wearing rubber gloves, shake dye bottle and measure 3 cap fulls of Violet dye into the hot water; stir well.

10. Gently wet tank top with warm water and wearing rubber gloves, immerse into dye mixture for about 15 minutes.

11. Remove top and squeeze out excess dye.

12. Wrap dyed tank top with plastic wrap. Place in microwave oven on high for 1-2 minutes.

Step 3:

13. Remove tank top from microwave (use care as top will be hot), and rinse with cool water until water runs clear. Then wash in warm soapy water and rinse. Hang to dry.
