Dye-Painted Star Tshirt

Step 1:

- Cover table with plastic sheet or tablecloth.

- Lay T-shirt on sheets of plastic wrap that have been overlapped so plastic is slightly larger than T-shirt.

- Position and press Tulip® Stars Stencil on upper right section of T-shirt.

- Cut a 6 square of parchment or craft paper and place it inside shirt under stencil to prevent resist from bleeding through.

- Use a small brush to apply Tulip® Fashion Art Resist to stencil. Select the size and number of stars you wish to use. Dry resist with a heat tool.

- Using a ruler and a water soluble marking pen, draw a vertical line on shirt, dividing it into one-third and two-third sections.

Preparing Rit Dye

Tip: Heat water in the microwave to be sure it is very hot (140 F).

- Wearing rubber gloves, measure and mix dye in small disposable containers. Stir well.

2 T. Golden Yellow Powder 3/4 C Very Hot Water
1 T. Fuchsia Powder ½ C Very Hot Water
1 T. Teal Powder ½ C Very Hot Water
3 T. Navy Liquid 2 C Very Hot Water
Note: No salt is needed with this method of dyeing.

Painting with Dye

- Starting at upper left top of shirt, brush on Rit Golden Yellow dye using horizontal brush strokes, from outside edge to vertical line. Cover one-third of shirt.

- Brush on Rit Fuchsia dye using horizontal brush strokes in middle one-third of shirt, overlapping the Golden Yellow dye about 1 - 2 inches.

- Brush on Rit Teal dye using horizontal brush strokes in bottom one-third of shirt, overlapping the Fuchsia dye about 1 - 2 inches.

- To brush dye on back side of shirt: Place a long piece of parchment or craft paper over white side of shirt along vertical line. Fold dye-painted section of shirt over paper. Brush dye on back side of shirt as above to be sure fabric is saturated. Use paper towels to wipe away any excess dye from plastic. Then fold shirt back on plastic wrap and remove paper.

- Brush Navy dye on remaining two-thirds of white shirt using long vertical strokes. Apply dye lightly over star stencil design.

- To brush dye on back side of shirt: Place a long piece of parchment or craft paper over one-third of shirt dye-painted with three colors. Fold Navy dye-painted section of shirt over paper and brush Navy dye on back side of shirt. Use paper towels to wipe away any excess dye from plastic.

- Then fold shirt back on plastic wrap and remove paper.

- Cover shirt with plastic wrap and seal top and under edges of plastic wrap. Fold to fit into microwave. Cover bottom of microwave with paper towels. Place plastic-wrapped shirt in microwave and set on High for 2 minutes. Wear rubber gloves or use a pot holder to remove from microwave. Cut open plastic wrap. Allow fabric and wrap to cool.

- Rinse shirt under warm, then gradually cooler, running water, holding shirt from yellow dyed section so dye flows through to the darkest area.

- Then wash with warm water and detergent; rinse and dry.
