Unfinished wood or wicker baskets can be dyed a custom color to coordinate with a holiday, special event or wedding. These Christmas baskets were dyed Cherry Red and Kelly Green using the immersion method, which takes just 20 minutes. Then they were dried and embellished with Christmas ribbon.

Step 1:

- Cover work surface with plastic table cover.

- Prepare Dye: Wearing rubber gloves, shake dye bottle and pour ½ cup Cherry Red dye into measuring cup. Add 2 cups very hot water; stir.

Step 2:

Test color with paper towel. If color is too light, add more dye or if it is too dark add more water.

Step 3:

- Fill container with 3 gallons very hot tap water (140°F), or enough water to cover basket. If water is not hot enough, heat some water in a tea kettle or in the microwave.

- Add dye solution to water and stir.

- Immerse basket in dye bath and weight down with stones. Let basket sit in dye bath for 20 minutes or until desired color is achieved. Check basket frequently and turn if necessary.

- Remove basket from dye bath and dry completely on paper towels. Dye other basket Kelly Green, following steps above.

- Seal baskets with one or two coats of polyurethane.

- Glue Christmas ribbon around rim on baskets.
