Denim Dress

During one of our thrift store jaunts, my sister bought a denim dress and then asked me to upcycle it for her. This was one of my first dye projects.

I dyed this denim dress violet, but it turned out to be a very subtle color change. The trim is dyed and crocheted.

Step 1:

I dyed this denim dress with violet Rit dye. I diluted a package of dye in hot water and then added it to a bucket filled with water to cover the dress. I soaked the dress and then added it to the dye. I let it sit for three hours stirring every 15 minute. I then removed it, rinsed thoroughly and hung to dry.
I decided I would add some crocheted trim. i thought it would be nice to have part of it be the same color as the dress, even though the color as very subtle. I unwound a ball of crochet thread (do not do this!!) and let it sit in the dye bath for about a half hour. I found out it makes a big mess of yarn and a lot of time to rewind. I then crochet a trim of ecru and the dyed thread, which turned out a light violet and attached by hand to the sleeves and bottom.
