Batik-Dyed Paper Flowers

Using Rit dye on paper provides crafters with a colorful new medium for creating all types of paper crafts. These white paper flowers are made of cotton fibers that dye wonderfully. Using color and a little imagination, they can be transformed into colorful flower accents suitable for use in all types of craft projects. Make a bouquet of flowers or use individual flowers as pins or to to accent greeting cards and scrapbook pages.

Step 1:

- Protect work area with newspapers or plastic.
- Mix Rit Dye: Note: For darker shades, use more dye.
- Powder: Mix 2 teaspoons dye and ½ cup hot tap water; stir well.
- Liquid: Mix 1 teaspoon dye and ½ cup hot tap water; stir.
- Using a small paint brush apply Batik-EZ to petals of flowers, either in the veins or on the tips, or near the center. Repeat on several different size flower petals. Flowers will be layered together. Let dry or use a heat tool.
- Paint, dip, or spray dye on flower petals.
- Dry flower petals in the microwave: Line bottom of microwave with paper towels. Place the dyed flower petals in the microwave and set on High for 1 - 2 minutes.
- Layer and glue 2 to 5 flower petals together. In center of flower, glue a dyed button or dab of glitter glue.
- Leaves: Cut leaf shapes from watercolor paper and dye green. Glue leaves to underside of flower. Or, dye one flower petal green to use as leaves.
- To make a pin, attach pin back to underside of flower.
