"Back To School" Apple Greeting Card

This card contains a 3-dimensional apple which is a removable magnet. The apple is stuffed and covered with Scarlet and Apple Green dye-sponged T-shirt fabric. The paper border around the apple is dye-sponged to resemble real autumn apples; then dried in the microwave.

Step 1:

For Card:

-Wearing latex gloves, mix 1 Tablespoon Apple Green dye with ½ cup water in a disposable container. Then mix 1 Tablespoon Scarlet dye with ½ cup water in a disposable container.

-Microwave both containers of dye solution for approximately 1 1/2 minutes.

-Wearing latex gloves, place 8 ½” x 11” sheet of white cardstock on paper towels. Dip one sponge into Scarlet dye and lightly sponge all over cardstock, leaving some white space. Repeat using a separate sponge and the Apple Green dye, overlapping the Scarlet in some areas. Continue until paper is covered.

-Place dye-sponged cardstock on paper towels and microwave on high approximately 1 minute to dry. Set aside.

Step 2:

-Cut olive green cardstock to 8 ½” x 5 ½” and fold in half to form 1/4 sheet size card.

-Cut two strips 1 ¼” x 4 ¼” from plaid paper, and 2 strips 7/8” x 5 ½”. Use Elmer’s Dot Runner to mount onto card front around window opening to form frame.

-From dye-sponged cardstock, cut 2 strips ¾” x 4 ¼” and 2 strips ¾” x 5 ½”. Mount over plaid paper onto card front around window, as shown.

-Cut 2 strips red cardstock ¼” x 4 ¼” and 2 strips ¼” x 5 ½”. Mount centered on dyed cardstock strips, as shown.

-Add a square copper brad to each cross point where red strips meet on front of card.

Step 3:

-Cut two strips dyed cardstock 4 ¼” x 1 ¼”. On inside top of card, mount on either side of window opening.

-Cut two strips 2 ½” x 3/4” from plaid paper. Mount between dyed cardstock strips to finish framing window opening on inside of card.

-Ink “smile often” stamp with Fired Brick ink and stamp onto scrap piece of olive cardstock. Trim as needed.

-Mount stamped sentiment onto small piece of dyed cardstock, being sure that cardstock is small enough to not show through window when card is closed. Mount to bottom right corner of page. Add small square of plaid paper, ¼” strip of red cardstock and square copper brad accent.

Step 4:

For Apple Magnet:

-Cut piece of white T-shirt fabric approximately 4” x 6”. Place on paper towels.

-Wearing latex gloves, lightly sponge Scarlet dye onto fabric, leaving some white space. Repeat using a separate sponge and Apple Green dye, overlapping the red in some areas.

-Place dyed fabric on paper towels and microwave approximately 1 1/2 minutes or until dry. Set aside.

-Wearing latex gloves, dye a small strip of T-shirt fabric with Dark Brown dye direct from bottle. Place on paper towels and microwave approximately 30 seconds to dry.

-Cut 2” circle from chipboard. Cut small “v” notch into top of circle.

Step 5:

-Glue 2 to 3 cotton balls to front of notched chipboard circle.

-Place facedown onto back side of dyed fabric.

-Gently wrap Scarlet/Apple Green dyed fabric around padded chipboard, gluing on the back with Craft Bond Tacky Glue. Cut small piece of extra dyed fabric to fit over back; glue in place.

Step 6:

-Glue magnet to center of back of apple. Let dry.

-For stem of apple, glue small piece of dyed Dark Brown fabric to top at notch.

-Glue green leaf button to front of apple over stem.

-Place second magnet onto apple magnet.

-On closed card, place Craft Bond Tacky Glue onto 2nd magnet back, center apple in window and mount to inside center of card. Your apple will be held to the back inside of the card with this second magnet, yet will show through the window on the front.
