Over-Dyed Shoes?? Sweeeet!!

Renate

Although nude heels are all the rage, one of our fave indie-designer/refashionistas, Megan Nielsen, wanted her pair of suede pumps tweaked with a bit more color. So what's a girl to do?  Well, what any innovative DIY diva would really...

She jumped at the chance to experiment and over-dyed them with a hint of Scarlet!

And, boy, are they super sweet.  Just love the color!

Now, we here at Rit haven't tried dyeing suede yet and would probably need some extra trials before we tell everyone to dye up their own "blue suede shoes". I do applaud the chutzpah to take the plunge and  admit that the ScotchGuard sealant is quite a brilliant idea. So, why not go see for yourself?  Pop over to Megan's site and get the full story and tutorial. And while you're there, take a peek at this season's line Sunburnt Country.  Sooo lovely!!

Recently on the Rit Dye Facebook page, I noticed an incredibly industrious refashionista posting her dye-inspired, fashion creations. Starting with thrifted garments, Maria starts the haute transformation with a series of snipping n' overdying and then goes all out with some super lace applique'ing, painting and even what looks like a bit of Bedazzling.  Gotta love those embellishments!!

Well, I appreciate her generously sharing her creations with fellow followers on FB so I thought I'd give her the spotlight here as well to inspire all the other crafty remake artists out there. So without further ado...

HERE'S THE MARIA COLLECTION!!

One of my personal faves is this linen top that was tie-dyed Petal Pink, Violet & Black with added lace.

A real make-over of a secondhand khaki skirt using two shades of Brown with Black. Then it was stenciled and handpainted with Lumiere Metallic Rust/Bright Gold paint, finished off with new gold buttons.

This simple number was created with a sunny Sunshine Orange tie-dye and a few sweet added beads.

Oh, and there's more...

Beverly Hills-based stylist and designer Kristen Turner likes to keep things fresh by changing her looks and style at whim. A young, self-professed commitment-phobe, she’ll change her hairstyle, boyfriend or clothing when she feels any of them require a new makeover. Rit Dye certainly comes in handy when restyling the clothing.

Kristen loves to play with color. She’ll dye a pair of stockings, and when she prefers another look, she’ll re-dye them to add interesting patterns, or mix colors together to create what feels like a new garment. “The possibilities with color and patterns are endless,” Kristen enthuses, “I’m always curious about a new process, or colors and effects. This season, Rit’s Fuchsia, Pink, Teal and Purple are hot.”

This re-vamping approach is also economical, since there’s no need to purchase new clothing or accessories when fresh fashion can be had for the price of a Rit Dye bottle or two -- or four.

CRAFTERNOONS WITH GLITTER N' GLUE!

On Kristen’s craft blog, Glitter n' Glue, she writes, “My favorite things in life are cocktails and crafts. I invited over a few of my fashion blogger friends to join me for a little of both. We sipped spiked lemonade and pulled out the bottles of Rit Dye for an afternoon of colorful crafting.” The results are spectacular -- and the ladies even dyed their clothing in heels!

She also features timely Royal Wedding DIY Inspirations, costume jewelry paint makeovers, Sperry Topsider customization for summer, how to make a knockout skirt out of a pillowcase, unique charm bracelets, belts, bows, and much more.

We all love the glam and glitz of superstar Hollywood especially when it culminates in that big fashion explosion which is the Oscars. Of course, we mortals watch it from the modest comfort of our living rooms but our friend, Marisa Lynch from New Dress A Day was right in the high styling mix!

How excited we were to hear that Marisa was featured on E!'s "Countdown to the Oscars" show. Surrounded by top couture culture, Marisa gave TinselTown a lesson in how to remake, refashion and repurpose yesterday's fashion into fresh new looks with a simple re-dyeing and re-sashing.  Targeting that dreaded one-ocassion frock... the bride's maid dress, she effortlessly transforms a few unfortunate examples into chic evening gowns that could be worn to almost any event. Wow, she really is the supa diva of eco-fashion!

On a personal note: I absolutely love that they used the sisters, Jenna Lamia and Dendrie Taylor, from The Fighter as the models. Now that is quite another amazing transformation, to go from brawling bruisers to lovely ladies of the red carpet.

Want to see how Marisa creates her fashion magic? Well, she's got the tutorials on her inspiring blog, New Dress A Day along with the full-on Hollywood experience with the effervescent Ross Mathews. Check out more of her stunning Oscar-inspired outfits from True Grit to Toy Story. You'll love it. C'mon who wouldn't want a hint of Natalie Portman's Black Swan look in their wardrobe, right?

More Dyed Lace Love...

Renate

The lace fashion crush is still going strong, my friends. We're loving all kinds of DIY lace confections lately. If you're itching to add some gossamer delights to accent your wardrobe, here's a few ideas to get you started...

From the wonderfully talented Marisa Lynch of NewDressADay, check out this JCrew-inspired tank top that she made from a thrifted glam gown! She was sweet enough write up a tutorial to show you how to design and dye one for yourself. ♡!

AND we've noticed a few lacey numbers bubbling up from the Rit Color Community as well.

Take a peek at Sarah's refashioned delicates. She's creating a whole collection of reconstructed granny unmentionables into super camis and dresses that she's unveiling at the Balboa Park's upcoming Earth Fair in San Diego. Big thumbs up for spreading the eco-chic love, girl!

Not into that much sewing?  Try DECOR8Rgirl's easy, dyed-lace floral accents. These are just perfect to embellish almost anything that needs a little pizazz. Add a rufflely flower to hat, dress or evening clutch? Ooh, I could picture whipping up a bunch in different shades for a neckline adornment to spice up a boring Tshirt.

Hmmm, maybe I'm getting that idea from Edie's embellished Tee tutorial. She added dyed buttons to the mix for a more textured look. Love that she upcycled a pair of old nylon lace tights to make some of the flowers.

Well, whatever the inspiration, go find yourself some old lace and get dyeing!  It makes for a great weekend project and an easy way to add a little femme to the spring wardrobe.

Oh, and one extra tip, look for cotton or nylon lace which will dye up just lovely. Polyester, unfortunately, doesn't play well with Rit Dye.

Marisa Wins The Award For Fab Refashioning!

Renate

Oh my, Marisa Lynch from New Dress A Day just keeps knocking out of the ballpark! It's been over a year of her daily refashion wizardry and she still keeps coming up with brilliant new ideas.  This one just floored me. Inspired by the petal pink gown that Natalie Portman wore to the Golden Globes...

Sweet Marisa conjures up the dazzling Hollywood spirit with a nip, tuck and dye dunk from her pile of $1 second-hand dresses.

She calls it a copycat but I call that ecological AND economical fashion awesomeness!! I don't want to give away the suspenseful, haute couture ending to this story, so go pop over to her super inspirational site for the full sartorial reveal.

Yes, you are gonna love it!

The esteemed judges have spoken and we'd like to congratulate the winning entries!

We received such a diverse and eclectic collection of submissions to the contest with upcycled fish scales turned jewelry, pajamas turned gameboy case and grandma's old tissue box ombréd anew and that's just to name a few.  Such brilliant ideas, must have made for a tough, yet exciting job for our judges. We applaud all the clever, enviro-friendly contestants and thank them for sharing the in the DIY spirit. Actually, I'll be writing more about some of my fave entries, so stay tuned for a follow-up post. But now...

Here's a closer look at the winners' eco-inspiring submissions:

BOHEMIAN CHIC THROW PILLOWS by Glamspoon

Updating boring pillowcovers, our Miss Glam recycled some old yellow floral fabric to create a ruffly spiral on each pillow. Using an earthy brown overdye, she conjured up a lovely, nostalgic, textured appeal to this home decor staple.

COCOON by Amanda

By mulching up old newspaper and magazines into paper pulp, Amanda sprays the Rit-dyed, mushy mixture onto a form. When it's dry it's a simple, yet perfect CD case giving techie data storage, a cool tactile, handmade look.

GRANNY BE GONE by Youresewcool

This refashionista found a tired nylon nightie in need of a new life. After an initial color splash in purple dye and with a little nip, tuck n' a stitch, she had herself quite the hip new look.

And there you have it. Thanks again to all generous eco-crafters that entered our contest. We hope the submissions will inspire other crafters to recycle, reuse and repurpose whenever they can. By saving something from the dustbin, I say we're all winners !

Spotted At CHA: Project Runway's Suede

Dianne

Look who's mingling with the crafty crowd at CHA... it's Suede, the Project Runway Designer and Winner of Season Five's Green Challenge.

Suede is launching the Simplicity SUEDEsays (tm) collection of sewing patterns, featuring super edgy, flirty and classic styles.

At the show, Suede was demonstrating how to make some kicking Fashionista Rock Star tees.

Using the Simplicity Electric Rotary Cutter, Suede cuts strips from old tees and refashions them into works of glam. This retro tee was overdyed with Rit Lemon Yellow, transforming it from a dingy white with navy sleeves to a vibrant yellow with green sleeves. Pretty cool trick!

Stay tuned cause we have more from CHA coming your way soon.

What's not to love about a stylish Tshirt refashion? We all seem to have a pile of tired Tshirts that we'll never realistically wear but can't bring ourselves to throw out. So, why not repurpose them into a sweet number that we'd be proud to have hanging in the closet? Well, the DIY Aussie style-maven, Megan Nielsen did just that.

Starting with a giant men's T, she snipped and pintucked her way to a lovely A-line tunic. Love how she dyed it for a bit of a color pop with some Rit Wine & Navy Dyes. Also, clever is how she positioned pleats to be able to clip out an unwanted logo.  That's one super upcycling trick, if I ever saw one!

This easy silhouette can work equally well as an empire-style mini dress or the hip, maternity option like Megan is showing off. (BTW: This tutorial is not all together recent. Mom & bouncing baby/toddler & big sister seem quite adorbably happy.)

Go check out her site and you'll get the full tutorials here and here. While you're there, take a peek at her indie fashion line too for real sweet feminine looks.  I'm sure you'll find some great inspiration!
