Upcycled Rice Bags into Dip-Dye Handbags!

Renate

Time for some fashionable recrafting today, friends! I've always been amazed by the packaging of basmati rice. It comes in woven bags with sewn handles and a zippered closure. C'mon, that's pretty much the definition of a purse, right? Well, I recently bought some rice in small 2Lb bags and with minimal effort upcycled the rice bags into new tiny carryalls.

Starting with this...

the bags got a quick dip-dyeing in fun combinations of Tangerine, Fuchsia & Evening Blue dyes. Just love woven the texture and how the print over-dyes for an interesting effect! Three bags were dyed all together, two bags I left as micro handbags and with one, I went a little further to create a hands-free, crossbody bag using dyed nylon webbing. Perfect for stashing a wallet, cellphone and sunglasses for an easy casual look. Next time, maybe we'll try a big 10Lb rice bag to create a sturdy new book tote. Could be fun!

OK, ready for the tutorial....

Color-Block Refashion #2: Dynamic Dip-Dye

Renate

For one of the easiest, DIY color-blocking ideas EVER, check out this fun dip-dyed, sweater refashion. Of course, we all have a ton of regular, solid-color sweaters in our closet, well, how about giving one a little fashion facelift by adding an extra stripe of color?

This sweater was a bright, bright lime-green and could take a bit of stripey action. So it got a quick dip of the waist and cuff ribbing in a dye bath of Rit Evening Blue dye.

But wait...  that doesn't look like blue!!  Of course, that's because when you overdye a very yellow green with blue the colors blend to make a new deep green shade. Pretty nifty, right? Of course, if you started with an old white sweater, you could dye it first to this lemon-lime shade with recipe #578 on our ColoRit Color Guide and then go on to the dip-dye.

Take a peek at these tips for more overdyeing/color blending ideas. The color combinations are endless especially if you know a bit of basic color theory. Remember your color wheel from grade school? Well, now's the time to get it spinning again!

Who doesn't want to jump into this season's Color-Block trend? You don't need to go shopping to add some vibrant color energy into your wardrobe. You can refresh and refashion some of the fave items already in your closet with a bit of dye.

I started with this drab, khaki trench coat that I never seem to wear.

Instead of just overdyeing it, which would blend with the original khaki color, I decided to remove half of the color and redye it. Using the Rit Color Remover on the bottom half, cuffs and belt, the jacket was ready for an infusion of pure Tangerine Tango and Evening Blue. How's that for a real color pop?

By now we all know that tantalizing Tangerine Tango is the 2012 Pantone Color of the Year and easy to DIY with equal parts Rit Tangerine and Sunshine Orange dyes. Check out all the Pantone recipes on our ColoRit Color Guide for more fab fashionista inspiration.

I'm so excited by the results, even the buttons dyed so nicely to match! Win-Win!

OK, get set for some dye magic cause here's the full how-to:

A Dyed-Shoe Refashion For New Year's Eve!!

Renate

Hmmm, what to wear for New Years Eve?? Well, you might have a swanky dress you've got your eye on but you'll need some dazzling shoes to go with it. How about dyeing some to match that special outfit? It's easy to dye satin shoes with Rit in any color you like. I went for that 2011 "color of the moment"... super electric cobalt. I think these will be amazingly stunning paired with a classic little black dress!

Add some dyed embellishments and a few sparkly bits and you've got a real show-stopper! Love how the toe detail had a hint of hip nautical chic.

And to start off 2011 with extra eco-kudos, these shoes were recycled wedding shoes. You can just imagine how many brides don't know what to do with white satin shoes after the wedding. Well, here's your chance to get eco-crafty and have a brand new look. That's a real WIN-WIN in my book!

And here's how...

Rit Shows Off Fall Colors at Southern Women’s Show

Dianne

Ana and Megan, mother & daughter hosts of When Creativity Knocks, an online web-based craft show, recently presented a series of DIY workshops at the Southern Women’s Show in Charlotte.  Rit was proud to be among the esteemed sponsors of the WCK workshops.

At the show, Ana and Megan teamed up with our friend, the talented designer, Cindi Bisson, who demonstrated how to make a lovely refashioned Tassel Pendant Necklace.

Using strips of torn bed sheets that were dyed in Rit custom colors, Cindi matched all of Pantone’s Top 10 Fall Colors:  Bamboo, Emberglow, Honeysuckle, Phlox, Cedar, Deep Teal, Coffee Liquer, Nougat, Orchid Hush, and Quarry.  You can find the recipes for all these fabulous fashion shades on the ColoRit Color Formula Guide

For the pendant, Cindi chose a wooden shaped leaf, which she demonstrated how to dye-paint with Rit.  For added texture and design, Cindi ink stamped designs over the dyed wood.  For extra pizzazz and embellishment, she added buttons that were hand-dyed with Rit.

Here’s the result …

Can't wait to make one for yourself? Well, stay tuned cause we’ve got a video and full tutorial coming very soon!

Kids' Camp Crafts #4: Rosette Bracelet

Dianne

Who would guess this funky rosette bracelet is made from a recycled T-shirt? This fun, upcycled craft comes from Jen Goode, the creative force behind JGoode Designs, a Denver-based art and design studio.  Jen loves all kinds of color, multi-media, mixing textures and materials to create interesting pieces.

Well for this project, Jen started out with a faded orange T-shirt, cut it up into narrow strips and overdyed the strips with Rit Fuchsia and Cherry Red. The colors mixed and blended together to create these unique shades of color. Whatever color T-shirt you start with, just remember the rules of color mixing apply! This is an easy, fun project that kids of all ages will enjoy!

Kids love knapsacks! They’re small and easy to stash when they aren’t needed, but they can be quite roomy when it’s time to carry around a pair of sneakers, towel or balls. So what could be more fun than to show the kids how to make their own out of tie-dyed pillowcases? Have them choose two or three of their favorite colors, wrap the pillowcases with rubber bands, dip-dye and then finish them off in the microwave. Wtih just a few snips and some no-sew tricks, the pillowcases can be turned into drawstring bags in no time at all.

This is the second in a series of camp-style crafts designed by the versatile Jen Goode of  JGoode Designs, a Denver-based art and design studio. Her expertise in handmade crafts, graphic design and illustration culminates in a treasure trove of DIYcreations and we're so excited to showcase her work to inspire you to get crafting with your kids.

Without further ado, here's the how-to:

Wondering what to do with that old pair of worn out blue jeans? Melony Bradley decided to cut off the pockets and recycle them into delightful party favors! Each pocket was embellished with dyed ribbons, canvas and wood shapes. To create a vintage-inspired look, Melony printed off nostalgic, patriotic photographs onto inkjet transfer sheets and ironed them onto beige fabric. Then patriotic sentiments or your guests’ names can be stamped onto dyed ribbon. So easy, and so much fun!

Living in the picturesque, small town of Hernando, MS, Melony has been designing full- time for the creative industry since 2004. Strapped to a cube in a marketing job prior to that, she dreamed of combining her marketing skills and talent for her love of all things craft! Her work has been published in national consumer craft and lifestyle magazines, including Women's World, Cloth Paper Scissors, Crafts’n Things, Create & Decorate, Christmas 365 and Sommerset Publications.
