dyed buttons

It's summer, the kids are home, sounds like a good time to get crafting! Here's the perfect fun project to do with the kiddos. We all have scraps of fabric, old jeans, worn out books or newspaper that could use a new life, don't we? Well look how the talented Jen Goode created these delightful flower button pins from all those odds and ends!

It's a super easy project that kids would enjoy doing with their friends and a little help of crafty adults. Dyeing can be done outside on a picnic table.  They'll have so much fun creating their own art materials by dyeing up fabric, paper and buttons and sharing with their crafty cohorts. You can use whatever fabric scraps and paper pieces you have and then re-purpose them into fantastic pieces of custom wearable art!   It's a recipe for a great kid's crafting party, isn't it!

Jen is the owner and “doodler in charge” of JGoode Designs, a Denver-based art and design studio. She specializes in handmade crafts, graphic design and illustration. Jen loves all kinds of color, multi-media, mixing textures and materials to create interesting pieces, often featuring her own illustrations and pattern work.

Honor your dad on Father’s Day by making him a special handmade card.  For those dads who love the outdoors, Cindi Bisson created this card with a winter woods theme.  She began by dyeing dictionary paper, drying it in the microwave and then stamping branch and tree images over it using Rit dye right out of the bottle!  For added texture and an element of surprise, she dyed drywall tape, available from home improvement stores.  What a fun material to add to any paper crafting project!  The buttons were dyed, too.

Cindi is a mixed-media artist and the Associate Producer for When Creativity Knocks, an online craft TV show.  She creates a weekly Simple Solutions project and writes a Product Review for the website.  To find out more about Cindi, visit her blog, Fat Cat Creations

Dye Up A Sweet Button Wreath

Renate

Got a tin of buttons? Well, you can make a fun button-craft like this sweet, mini holiday wreath. Most buttons are made from a nylon-based plastic and can be easily dyed to any color you like. Oh, the possibilities! I chose varying shades of greens and teals for a happy, little wreath. I think it came out rather cute, don't you?

Here's how you can make one too...

Get Festive With DIY Dyed Button Ornaments

Dianne

Instead of a cookie swap this year, why not try a button swap! Ask your friends to dye some bags of buttons and bring them to a party. Then swap the dyed-buttons, and spend the evening filling glass ornaments. Dyeing buttons is easy and requires very little time. When making your own ornaments, colors can be personalized and color-coordinated to your decor. Handmade ornaments are great for gift-giving, too!

How fun!!

Here's how you can make your own...

Embellishing With Dyed Buttons and Lace

Edie

Why not turn a boring old jersey T into an elegant, embellished statement?  It's easy to jazz up a simple top by just adding some matching dyed fabric flowers and buttons.

I started with a Tshirt that had a cute shape but was getting a little dreary from overuse. Using scraps of jersey fabric and some recycled nylon lace, I whipped up sweet accent flowers and leaves. To top it all off, I dyed some buttons for extra texture. Lovely, right?

Fashion Upcycling With Dyed Buttons

Edie

There's so many ways to redo, refashion and refresh those tired togs that wind up in the far reaches of your closet. I'm always inspired by all the brilliant, crafty upcyclers I come across online that can deconstruct and restructure garments in a flash like a preview of the next Project Runway. Well, not feeling quite so ambitious, I found a way to easily update pretty much everything from Tshirts to pillows to even shoes. Just dye up some buttons, all mixed shapes and sizes, to create colorful, funky designs on anything in your style arsenal that needs just that little extra pizazz.

Sporting A New Denim Dip-Dye Fedora

Edie

Like chocolate and peanutbutter, some things just seem to go together naturally. So when I was contemplating a new denim project AND I'd been so crushing on straw fedora hats lately. It came to me in a flash of inspiration... Whammo! A denim dip-dyed fedora, of course!

C'mon, denim goes with everything, right? This is gonna be a new classic look for me. It's amazing how well the Rit Dye matches the actual denim fabric. Take a look, I added some upcycled jean fabric as a hat band with twisty floral accents. Perfecto!
