Wax-less Batik-Dyed Holiday Table Topper Made Easy!

There’s still time to make this festive batik-dyed holiday table topper.  Janis Bullis started with a red gingham fabric square; then added a batik-dyed tree border as an accent.  The tree motif was stenciled onto border strips using Crafter’s Pick Batik-EZ Resist Medium.  After the resist dried, Kelly Green dye mixed with a small amount of hot water was dye-painted around the tree shapes in a swirling motion, creating light and dark shaded areas.  The resist prevents the dye from being absorbed into the fabric.  When the border strips are rinsed and washed, the resist washes out, resulting in a batik-like effect. This is a fun technique that is so much easier than using the traditional batik method with hot wax.  To finish, the batik-dyed borders are sewn around the gingham square and tassels added at the corners.  Drape the table topper over a round table skirt and you’ve got a festive table for a foyer or family room!  Click here for the full tutorial and tree pattern.
