ShamROCK Your Socks For St. Patty's Day!

Edie

Looking to wear some green on St. Patrick’s Day and catch the luck of the Irish? Well, check out this cool idea from the Rit Project archive designed by our friend, Barbara Warholic

It's super easy and super fun!  Just find a pair of cotton socks, old or new, wrap them with rubber bands and dye them Kelly Green. It's so fast to whip these up, you can make a bunch and share them with your friends.

Loving the sweet ribbon detailing!

Here's the how-to:

SUPPLIES:

  • Rit Liquid Dye: Kelly Green

  • White 100% Cotton Socks

  • ½ yd. Shamrock Ribbon, 3/8” wide

  • Measuring Cup

  • Plastic Container

  • Disposable Spoon

  • 16 Rubber Bands

  • Rubber Gloves

  • Plastic Table Cover

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Prewash and dry socks to remove any finishes that may interfere with dye absorption.

2. Cover table with plastic sheet or tablecloth.

3. Wrap 8 rubber bands horizontally around each sock, spacing them about 1 ¼” apart.

(The tighter the bands are wrapped, the more white area there will be.)

4. Dip socks in water; squeeze out excess. Set aside.

5. Wearing rubber gloves, measure and mix 2 Tablespoons Kelly Green dye with 2 cups very hot water (140°); stir well. Note: If water is not hot enough, heat water in the microwave or tea kettle.

6. Immerse socks in dye solution and let soak for 5 – 10 minutes, depending upon the desired color.

7. Remove socks and rinse in cool water. Remove rubber bands and continue rinsing until water runs clear. Then wash with warm water and detergent; rinse and dry.
