Going Shibori For Halloween

An easy Shibori technique was used to create two “Spooky T-shirts.” Take your pick between a Creepy Black Cat or a Ghosty Boo design. Long hand-running stitches at the bottom of the tee created the Shibori like effect. Shirts were dip-dyed and finished off in the microwave. The Black Cat and Boo were cut from washable felt. So easy and so much fun. These T-shirts are perfect to wear for Happy Hauntings!

Black Cat Shibori T-Shirt

1. Beginning at bottom edge of shirt, draw 7 parallel chalk lines across shirt 1 ½” apart.

2. Using heavyweight thread, sew a ½” – ¾” running stitch through both layers of the shirt along the chalk lines.

3. Pull the threads tight to gather the fabric along the lines. Knot threads. Wrap rubber bands tightly over the gathered lines of stitching.

4. Dip shirt in water and squeeze out excess water. Set aside.

5. Prepare Rit dye: Measure and mix ½ cup Sunshine Orange liquid dye or 1 box powder dye with 4 cups very hot water.

6. Pour dye into shallow plastic container or bowl. Immerse shirt in dye bath for 2 minutes. Wearing rubber gloves, move top of shirt around in dye bath and push down on tied area to help dye penetrate the fabric. Then remove shirt and squeeze out excess dye and place in shallow plastic container.

7. Measure and mix ½ cup Black liquid dye or 1 box powder dye with 1 cup very hot water.

8. Carefully brush Black dye on tied part of shirt. Then squeeze out excess dye and place in plastic container. Keep black dyed area away from the orange.

9. Cover container with plastic wrap. Cover bottom of microwave with paper towels. Microwave plastic-wrapped dish in oven on High for 2 minutes. Remove container and plastic wrap carefully – items will be hot. Allow to cool.

10. Carefully cut rubber bands and thread. Rinse shirt under cool running water until water runs clear. Hold shirt so the orange dye runs down through the black. Then wash with warm water and detergent; rinse and dry.

11. Trace black cat pattern in reverse onto one side of Steam-A-Seam 2. Peel off paper from other side and stick to black felt square. Cut out black cat from felt. Peel off remaining paper, leaving Steam-A-Seam on the felt. Stick cat appliqué to top of T-shirt. Cover with a press cloth and iron 10-20 seconds.

12. Apply self-stick rhinestones to cat’s face. Note: For extra security, add a dab of E- 6000 glue.

1. Prepare T-shirt in the same manner, following Steps 1 – 4.

2. Prepare Rit dye: Measure and mix ½ cup Black liquid dye or 1 box powder dye with 4 cups very hot water. Pour dye into a shallow plastic container, and dye shirt following Step 6.

3. To microwave and launder follow Steps 9 and 10.

4. Trace Ghost and Boo patterns in reverse onto one side of Steam-A-Seam 2. Peel off paper from other side and stick to white felt square. Cut out Ghost and Boo letters from felt. Peel off remaining paper, leaving Steam-A-Seam on the felt. Stick appliqués to top of T-shirt. Cover with a press cloth and iron 10-20 seconds.
