Dyed Sisal Rope Vase

Dianne

No table setting would be complete without a vase filled with flowers!  To keep with the beach theme, Melony Miller Bradley dyed sisal rope and wrapped it around a glass vase. The same decorative wood shapes used to make the napkin rings were dyed and added to the vase for a perfectly coordinated look!

  • Computer & Printer
  • Dyeing Supplies: Rubber gloves, measuring spoons, measuring cup, 2-gallon plastic container, 1-gallon plastic bags, stirring spoon, paper towels, old towel, plastic table cover

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Cover work surface with a plastic table cover.  Shake all dye bottles before measuring dye.

2. Wearing rubber gloves, prepare dyebath for dyeing sisal rope in Blue Curacao #565:  Mix and measure 8 Tablespoons Aquamarine, 1 teaspoon Kelly Green with 4 cups very hot water (140 F) in a 2 gallon plastic container; stir well.  Immerse rope into dyebath,  making sure all parts of rope are submerged.  Stir occasionally and turn rope to be sure all sides are dyed.  Allow rope to remain in dyebath for 15 minutes or until desired color is achieved.

3. Remove rope from dyeath and rinse in cool water to remove excess dye. Wrap in old towel and squeeze out remaining excess dye and water. Hang to dry.

4. To dye wood circle:  Pour some of the dyebath into a 1-gallon plastic bag.  Immerse wood circle into dye; seal bag.  Let soak 10-15 minutes.  Remove and place on paper towels to dry.

5.  To dye wood starfish button Orange/Peach # 464: Measure and mix 1/16 Teaspoon Scarlet and 1/16 Teaspoon Sunshine Orange with ½ cup very hot water in 1-gallon plastic bag; stir well. Immerse wood starfish into dye; seal bag.  Let soak 10-15 minutes.  Remove and place on paper towels to dry.

6. To attach rope to vase:  Starting at the bottom, hot glue one end of rope to bottom of glass vase; finger press in place. Continue wrapping and gluing rope around vase to hold it securely. When top portion of vase is wrapped, cut off excess rope with scissors and glue remaining end of rope to vase.

7. To make table tags: Select font of your choice on your computer.  Insert inkjet cotton sheet into printer, following manufacturer’s directions.  Type out table number or other sentiment.  Print and cut out sentiments into long strips.  Trim one end with scissors as shown, leaving at least 1” on opposite end for tucking under the wood circle.

8. Glue starfish to round wood circle.  Attach self-adhesive gem to center of starfish.  Let dry.

9. Glue tag to back of wood circle.  Then glue finished piece to center of vase.  Let dry.

Fill vase with flowers – Melony used sea grass and roses.
