Create Colorful Circle Patterned Tights!

Edie

Guess what I've been working on, my fashionable friends!  Tights, tights and more tights. So get ready cause I'm gonna show you how to create a ton of hip color patterns on ordinary tights so you can have some styling leggy looks like no other.

Today's variation is a cool circular motif. I made these for a mini video tutorial that I did with the ever-fab Kristen from Be VainGlorious or DIY Trying. It's part of her ThreadbangerStyle DIY fashion series. We did a brief overview of how to create the look in the video...

and here's the full tutorial with a few tips that'll be helpful when you make your own.

SUPPLIES:

  • Prewashed nylon or cottonblend tights
  • Rit Liquid Dye (I used Teal)
  • Small Rubber Bands
  • Gallon-sized Plastic Container
  • Measuring Cup
  • Mixing Spoon
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Plastic Table Cover

INSTRUCTIONS:

1)First off, cover your work surface with plastic and grab those rubber gloves.

2)Decide on what type of circle pattern you'd like. It could be random circles or a structured pattern. I did two rows of equal circles, so I marked off lightly with a pencil where the center of each circle should be.

3)Working through both layers of one leg of the tights, pinch at the center pencil mark and gather about 1" of fabric.

4) Twist a rubber band tightly on this area so only about 1/2" of fabric is exposed. Repeat until all center marks are bound on both legs.

5) Soak the tights for a few minutes in warm water and squeeze out excess.

6) Shake, measure and mix 1/4 cup of Rit Dye in 2 quarts of very hot 140˚ water for about 5 minutes or until the desired color is achieved. Stir occasionally to make sure the dye is flowing freely throughout the tights.  Remember: Colors are darker when wet so keep that in mind when you decide on your final tone.

7) Rinse in cool water until water runs clear.

8) Remove all the rubber bands.

9) Wash in warm water with mild detergent and hang dry.
